Family owned  |  Walk-in shop and mobile service  |  774 N. Ridgeview Rd, Olathe, next to Johnson County Motor Vehicles

What the shop does

What you can bring to the counter in Olathe, and what we do with it.

Walk in, no appointment

Keys cut while you wait. Bring the key, or bring the lock, or bring the whole door handle if that is easier. Most counter jobs are done in minutes. Bring the drawer front if the drawer will not open. Bring the padlock, the cabinet, the cash box, the toolbox, the odd little lock that came with something years ago. If it cannot come off the door, that is what mobile service is for, and we cover Olathe and the rest of Johnson County.

Rekey at the counter

You do not have to buy a new lock to change what your key opens. Take the cylinders off and bring them in, and we rekey them at the counter so they answer to a new key, or so every door in the house takes the same one. Same hardware, same finish, same holes in the door. Bring every lock you want on the same key at the same time, because that is what lets us match them.

Locks and hardware

On the shelves: deadbolts and entry sets for houses, knobs, levers and privacy sets, padlocks from the everyday to the shrouded and weather resistant, keypads and electronic locks, interchangeable cores, mortise and rim cylinders, commercial grade hardware, closers and exit device parts, cabinet, drawer and mailbox locks, and the key blanks behind the counter. If we do not have the exact thing on the shelf we can usually order it, and we will tell you plainly if what you want is not worth ordering.

Advice is free

People come in to ask whether a lock is any good, or what to do about a door that will not latch. Ask. We would rather you got the right answer than the expensive one. Three things go wrong with a lock bought from a photograph. It does not fit the door, because backset, bore size and door thickness all have to match. The finish does not match, because screens lie about colour. And it is not the grade you assumed, because the difference is inside the housing.

Lock installation

We install locks, not just sell them. Bring a door's measurements or the old lock to the counter and we will set you up with hardware that fits, or we come out and fit it on the door across Johnson County. A deadbolt is only as good as the strike and the screws behind it, so a proper install means boring the door and frame correctly and anchoring into the stud, not just swapping the visible part.

Lock repair and replacement

A lock that sticks, drags or will not latch is usually telling you something before it fails for good. Take it off and bring it in, or we come to the door, and we repair worn hardware, closers and strikes rather than defaulting to a new lock when the old one can be saved. When a lock genuinely cannot be saved, we replace it with hardware matched to the opening and the grade you actually need.

How a counter visit goes

What happens from the lock on the counter to it working again.

First, bring the lock, key or hardware

Bring the key, the lock, the handle set, the drawer front, the padlock, the cash box, whatever it is. We would rather look at the thing than at a description of it.

Then, we look at the actual part

We check what you have on the counter, the backset, the bore, the finish and the grade, instead of guessing from a photo online where screens lie about colour and the grade is hidden inside the housing.

Next, we cut, rekey, repair or match it

We cut the key, rekey the cylinder, repair the hardware, or match you to a lock that actually fits your door and is worth the money, including when the cheaper option is the right one.

Finally, we check it works before you leave

Counter work is the fastest and cheapest way to get any of it sorted, and we check it before you walk out so you are not back the next day.

Lock store questions, answered

A few of the things people ask before they drive over.

  • Yes. A real storefront at 774 N Ridgeview Rd in Olathe, by Johnson County Motor Vehicles and across from the Olathe Community Center. Walk in during opening hours, no appointment.

  • Both. We fit locks at the counter if the hardware comes in, and we come out across Johnson County to install, repair or replace locks on the door. A deadbolt is only as good as the strike and the screws behind it, so a proper install matters.

  • Yes, and often that is the right call. Take it off, bring it in, and we repair worn hardware where it can be saved rather than defaulting to a new lock.

  • Bring the old lock, or a photo of the door edge and a tape reading. Backset, bore size, door thickness, finish and grade all have to match, and that is what a photo online cannot show you.

A storefront, not a phone number

Almost every locksmith listed for Olathe is a van and a phone number with an address that is a formality. We are a storefront you can walk into on N Ridgeview Rd, next to Johnson County Motor Vehicles, family owned, where you can look at hardware in person and talk to the person who will do the work. A business you can walk into is one that has to stand behind the job, and it makes most work cheaper, since a counter job carries no callout.
